Throughout the recent economic downturn it is important to notice area businesses that have survived generations of economic roller coaster rides and remained in business. Each week through the end of 2009 the Villager Journal will salute these area businesses. Congratulations go out to all those who have remained in our community, making the area a place in which we are proud to call home.

Ash Flat Pharmacy, owned by Pharmacist David Jennings and his wife Barbara, is pretty much a permanent fixture in the lives of many residents who have grown up in or lived in Sharp County.

The Jennings have owned the Ash Flat Pharmacy since Feb. 1, 1969, just two years after David graduated from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences with his pharmacy degree.

The Jennings purchased the pharmacy from Doc and Peggy Arnhart in 1969. The Arnharts had owned Arnhart Pharmacy in downtown Ash Flat since 1928 and moved their business from the downtown location to the present location of the Ash Flat Pharmacy in 1963. At that time the clinic, which was operated by Dr. Tucker for numerous years, also opened. At the time of the relocation, the name of the pharmacy was changed from Arnhart Pharmacy to the Ash Flat Pharmacy. The Jennings left the name the same when they took over the pharmacy in 1969 and it has since remained the Ash Flat Pharmacy for over 40 years.

As a child, memories serve me of waiting in line during the winter months for a bottle of pink antibiotic Mr. Jennings would carefully mix to help cure an awful cold or stomach ache. He was always sure to explain the method of giving the medicine and insured that my parents had the proper medicine dropper.

Courteous and friendly service is one of the things the family strives to uphold. Mrs. Jennings laughed and said, "We raised our boys back here (pointing to the back of the pharmacy)."

Ash Flat Pharmacy offers local deliveries and Mr. Jennings said he is seeing customers who are children and grandchildren of many of his original customers. Serving generations of residents of Sharp County during times when they are ill is something the family does with a smile.

Besides the normal prescription medications available, the pharmacy also offers numerous over the counter medicines, gifts, Leaning Tree cards and even has a great selection of Justin boots for the entire family. Besides being a pharmacy, Jennings also carries a complete line of tack and numerous western style purses and jewelry.

Next time your prescription needs a refill or you're under the weather, don't forget to visit David and Barbara at Ash Flat Pharmacy located at 97-D Ash Flat Drive, in Ash Flat.
