The Izard County Cougars opened the 2009 season in fine fashion with a 58-50 victory over Maynard Oct. 20 at the Cougars' Den in Brockwell.
A big fourth period paved the way, with the Cougars outscoring the Tigers 21-5 down the stretch to rally for victory. The Cougars were down 30-19 at the half.
Ryan Walker's 22-points, 11-rebounds double-double paved the way for Izard County. Josh Ball chipped in 12 points for the home team.
Kyle King added eight, Preston Harmon seven, Jordan Everett five and Caleb Cowan four for the Cougars.
It wasn't as close in the girls' contest, with Izard County crushing Maynard 61-42.
Rachel Harmon tossed in 18 points to lead the Lady Cougars.
Amber Hall finished with 15 and Kaydie Campbell logged 13 for Izard County.
Trisha Arnold had seven, Kristin Doty six and Harmony Herron two for the Lady Cougars.
The Izard County junior Cougars got 18 points from Trenton Hatman in a season-opening 37-27 victory over Flippin Oct. 19.
The junior Cougars outscored Flippin 12-6 in the fourth period to seal the deal.
Chris King and Jesse Ball notched six points apiece for Izard County.
