Katz win marathon with Rockets

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

It was business as usual Oct. 23 as the Melbourne Bearkatz opened the 2009 basketball season with a game against Turrell in the Joe V. Jones Classic in Monette.

Every time Melbourne and Turrell square off, it's always a hard-fought affair and this one was no different.

It took four overtimes, but the Katz prevailed with an 80-74 victory over the Rockets.

With Melbourne up by three near the end of regulation, the Rockets got a trey at the buzzer to knot things at 51-all after the fourth period.

The match was tied at 56-all after the first OT, 60-all after the second and thanks to a layup near the buzzer of the third extra frame by Dalton Grigg, 68-all after the third overtime.

Melbourne finally opened a bit of breathing room in the fourth OT and pushed past Turrell 80-74 in a real thriller.

Spencer Caraway paced the Bearkatz with 23, while Kody Caraway added 22 and Grigg 20.

The Lady Bearkatz fell to the Bay Lady Yellowjackets 53-47 earlier in the evening.

Maggie Cooper tossed in 28 points to pace the Lady Katz.

The Bearkatz (1-1) fell to the Flippin Bobcats 55-50 the following evening, Oct. 24, at the Twin Rivers Classic in Norfork.

Flippin led 10-5 after the first period, but Melbourne narrowed the gap to 24-21 at the half.

The Bearkatz kept working and pushed in front 35-31 after three periods of play.

But the Bobcats regrouped and Melbourne went cold early in the fourth, with Flippin winning by five points.

Spencer Caraway led Melbourne with 20 points. Kody Caraway added 16 and Cody Cooper 10. Derek Baird finished with four points for the Bearkatz.

The Lady Bearkatz (1-1) knocked off Flippin 53-40 earlier in the evening.

Maggie Cooper scored 12 points for Melbourne, with Kylee Ables adding 10.
