Viola enjoys opening week

The Viola Lady Longhorns had little trouble with Southside-Bee Branch at the Twin Rivers Classic in Norfork Oct. 23.

The Lady Horns (2-0) sped in front 14-4 after the first period and rolled to a big 58-29 victory.

Michaela Thompson had a big night for Viola, finishing with 24 points. Taylor Griggs added 21 and Alex Duncan hit for 11.

The Lady Longhorns opened the 2009 season with a 58-29 win over the Rural Special Lady Rebels at the Twin Rivers Classic Oct. 21.

Thompson tossed in a game-high 24 points, while Griggs tallied 18 and Duncan six. Leslie Barker and Leslie Shrable added four points each, with Andrea DuVall finishing with two.

The Longhorns roughed up the Rural Special Rebels 46-16 later in the evening.

Viola held a 10-3 lead after one and 23-9 at the half.

Jackson Rains logged 15 points for the Horns, while Blake Baumunk had eight and Jordan Cotter seven. Dallas Holt added six, with Josh Gullion and Dolan Johnston logging four points apiece. Dylan Holstine ended the night with two points.

Viola made it two wins in a row with a 52-42 victory over Cotter Oct. 23 at the Twin Rivers Classic.

Cotter paced the Longhorns with 12 points, while Jacob Payne added 10 and Rains nine.

The Viola junior Longhorns wasted little time in recording their first win of the 2009 season, as they hammered Sloan-Hendrix 47-24 Oct. 19.

Austin Gardner paved the way with a game-high 29 points for the junior Longhorns.

The junior Lady Longhorns were not so fortunate and fell to Sloan-Hendrix 24-14 earlier in the evening.

Kirsten Moore had five points for Viola.
