The Maynard Tigers kept things close for awhile, but in the end just couldn't keep the Viola Longhorns from racking up their eighth win in eight games to start the 2009 season.

Led by Jordan Cotter's 13 points, Viola cruised past Maynard 46-28 Nov. 10 at the Highland Classic at the A.L. Hutson Memorial Center.

The Tigers were within two points of Viola early in the third, 21-19, when the Horns put the pedal to the metal and pulled away.

A layup from Blake Baumunk (seven points) started a 16-1 period-ending run for Viola.

Cotter tossed in five points during this spurt, as did Ethan Houghtaling (nine points), pushing the Longhorns in front 37-20 after three periods of play.

Jacob Payne scored all five of his points in the game from the charity line in the fourth period and Viola ended the game on a 7-0 run to post the 46-28 victory over Maynard.

The first period was tight going, with Maynard pulling in front 4-1 early.

Dylan Holestine (five points) hit the Horns' first bucket of the game and Cotter added a baseline pull-up to push the Horns in front 5-4.

Jackson Rains (six points) hit a shot and then added a pair of free throws, and Cotter stuck back a missed shot late in the frame to give Viola a 10-9 lead after one.

With Maynard up 12-10 early in the second, Viola ripped off seven straight points to pull ahead 17-12.

The Tigers got a late bucket, but Cotter drilled a hoop with nine ticks left on the clock to send the team to the half with Viola on top 19-14.

Then, with a big blitz in the third period, the Longhorns opened up enough breathing room to end the evening with an 18-point win over Maynard.
