Health issues responsible for collision

Thursday, December 3, 2009

Ash Flat Police Chief Anthony Wiles said a series of Nov. 28 accidents originating in the Walmart parking lot and ending with a vehicle running under a semi-truck trailer were the result of the driver having what appeared to be mini strokes.

Wiles said Gerald Holfert, 76, of Cherokee Village, hit four separate vehicles in the 1998 Lumina he was driving. The vehicles were all parked in the Walmart parking lot.

After pulling out on the highway, near Kenner Road, Holfert ran under the back of a semi-truck trailer causing serious injuries that resulted in him being flown by Air Evac to St. Bernard's in Jonesboro. As of press time, Holfert is listed is serious but stable condition.

The driver of the 1983 Peterbilt semi, Karl Crops, of Seymour, Mo., said he saw the driver slumped over the wheel prior to his running under the truck.

Ash Flat Police Officer Braden Ables and Spring River Ambulance Service responded to the accident.

That was our brother-in-law! He had his angels with him. Not to have anything broken was a miracle. We in Wisconsin are so glad he is OK. We are all thinking of him and his wife,Brenda.
