Thayer, Mammoth Spring set Christmas parades

Thursday, December 3, 2009

Christmas comes before anyone knows it, after the first of December. Before the big day, all throughout the month there are plans and celebrations, and Santa Claus makes his rounds to see who's been naughty and who's been nice and find out what everyone wants for Christmas.

One knows Christmas is just around the corner with the annual Christmas parade.

Area Christmas parades kick off Dec. 5 with Thayer's Christmas Parade.

Parade line-up will be at the Thayer High School at 12:30 p.m. with the parade starting at 2 p.m. Float prizes will be $75 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third. Also, the first three visiting (out-of-town) bands will receive $100.

Those who want to participate in the parade can call the Tourist Information Center at 264-7324.

Mammoth Spring will have its Christmas parade Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. Line-up starts at 1 p.m. at the Mammoth Spring School campus.

The Grand Marshals for this year's Christmas parade are members of the Mammoth Spring Garden Club. The Garden Club has done much for the city by contributing to the building of the fire station in 1986 and to the restoration of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. This church is owned by the city and was Mammoth Spring's first building to be put on the National Historic Register of Historic Places. The Garden Club also purchased glass doors to protect the 100 plus-year-old doors to the church. The Garden Club will also host a reception following the Home Tour at 5 p.m., Dec. 6. The Home Tour will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are on sale at various businesses. The Garden Club continues to help the community in any way it can.

Prizes for floats in the Mammoth Spring Christmas Parade will be first place $150, second place $100 and third place $50.

Those wishing to participate in the Mammoth Spring Christmas Parade can call Dave Jackson at the Mammoth Spring State Park at 625-7364 or city hall at 625-3518.

Festivities will continue in Thayer on Dec. 18 when secret judges will drive around town after 5 p.m. to judge houses that are decorated for Christmas. First prize for the contest will be $75, second $50 and third $25. Those who want to make sure their house is judged can call 264-7324.
