The Viola Lady Longhorns captured the championship game of the 50th annual Williams Baptist College Invitational Tournament at the Southerland-Mabee Center in Walnut Ridge Dec. 5 with a 41-38 win over Class 4A Pocahontas.
Taylor Griggs led the way with 15 points for the Lady Longhorns.
The Longhorns, too, played for the WBC Tourney title, but a 25-foot trey at the buzzer by Black Rock's Tyler Newell stopped Viola from making it a sweep in Walnut Ridge.
Newell's shot gave Black Rock a tight 42-41 win over Viola.
Jordan Cotter paced Viola with 13 points.
Dylan Holestine added 12 points for the Horns.
In the semi-final round Dec. 4, Michaela Thompson poured in a game-high 34 points to lead the Lady Horns past Corning 57-45.
Leslie Barker followed with 18 points for Viola.
It took an extra period, but the Longhorns made it past Pocahontas 51-48 in OT Dec. 4, earning Viola a trip to the finals.
Jackson Rains scored 16 to lead Viola.
In the quarter-final round, the Longhorns knocked off Hoxie 51-40 Dec. 3.
Viola held a 10-6 lead after the first period, 21-13 at the half and 33-28 after the third frame.
Viola outscored the Mustangs 18-12 down the stretch in the fourth to put the game away.
Rains paced the Horns with 18 points, while Blake Baumunk added 13.
Cotter finished with eight for Viola.
The Lady Longhorns were 10-point victors, 36-26, over Marmaduke in the quarterfinals Dec. 3.
The game was fairly tight, with Viola up 15-6 after one, 20-18 at the break and 27-20 heading into the fourth period.
Thompson tossed in 13 points, while Heather Simmons had nine for the Lady Longhorns.
