Thayer only lost four games all last season and three of those losses came at the hands of the Lady Indians.
Meeting for the first time this year Dec. 11 at Thayer High School, the result was largely the same as last year's encounters between the two rivals, with Couch fending off the Lady Cats for a 42-38 victory.
Later in the evening, the Bobcats knocked off the Indians 48-31.
In the girls' clash, except for a brief time early in the first period, the Lady Indians led the entire way.
With a 10-7 advantage after the first period, Couch got 10 points from Lizzie Nessling in the second period to take a 22-14 lead to the half. Nessling led all scorers with a game-high 16 points.
Plagued with foul trouble in the first half, Whitney Mills (10 points), a former All-State standout for the Lady Indians who now wears the green-and-white for the Lady Bobcats, got on track in the second and tossed in Thayer's first five points to edge the Lady Bobcats within five, down 24-19.
But Couch responded with nine unanswered points to help the Lady Indians maintain a 34-23 advantage heading into the final frame.
Thayer fashioned a nice 6-0 run early in the fourth to keep Couch from running away with things.
Then in the last two minutes, Lacey Hawkins (nine points) heated up from downtown and knocked down two of her three treys for the game, the last one coming with 10 seconds left, pulling Thayer within three points, 41-38.
But that was as close as the Lady Bobcats could get, with Couch posting the 42-38 victory.
Cassie Roberts logged 14 points for Couch, while Crystal Britt had six and Jordan Hale five. Stephanie Nessling finished with one point for the Lady Indians.
Kaley Hebert led Thayer with 11 points, with Samantha Oakes and Laken Martin posting four points in each.
On the boys' side of things, just two days removed from exploding for 37 points against Winona, Justin Shipp fired in a game-high 23 points to power the Bobcats in their 48-31 win over the Indians.
Eddie Meier led Couch with 13 points.
Shipp racked up 10 points in the first period to help the home team to a 12-6 lead after one.
Thayer took a 21-15 advantage into the half and then the Bobcats began to pull away in the third.
Holding the Indians to just four points, one field goal and pair of free throws, in the third, the Bobcats opened up a 35-19 lead after three periods of play.
Tommy Martin tossed in seven points, while Josh Huckabee finished with six points for Thayer.
Heath Barbee and Dylan Dennis had five points each. Jared Foley ended the night with two points for the Cats.
Colton Goetting logged six points for Couch, with Derek Orchard adding four and Brandin Orchard three. Derrick Martin and Dale Ryans posted two points apiece and Chris Taylor finished with one point.
The junior varsity Indians opened the night with a tight 39-37 win over the JV Bobcats.
