Viola squads one step short of championship game

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

The Viola Lady Longhorns' bid to win their third straight tournament title this year came up a bit short with a 43-30 setback to the Mountain View Lady Yellowjackets Dec. 11 in the semi-final round of the annual Lyon College Invitational Tournament at Becknell Gymnasium in Batesville.

Viola had won its previous two tourney appearances of the season, the Arvest Bank and Williams Baptist College Tournaments, before the loss to Mountain View.

Michaela Thompson tossed in 12 points against the Lady Yellowjackets, the eventual tourney champs, while Taylor Griggs added 10.

Griggs played her way onto a spot on the All-Tournament squad.

The Longhorns, too, were stopped in the Lyon College semis, with a 57-43 loss to the Cave City Cavemen Dec. 11.

Cave City led 20-10 after the first period and 32-20 at the half.

Jackson Rains paced the Horns with 14 points. He was named to the All-Tournament team for the Longhorns.

In the quarters Dec. 10, the Lady Longhorns knocked off previously unbeaten Cave City 41-35.

Viola held a 12-9 advantage after one, 22-14 at the half and 31-28 after three.

Griggs led the way with 16, with Leslie Barker netting 13.

The Longhorns hammered Midland 50-31 in the quarterfinals Dec. 10 behind 19 points from Rains.

Blake Baumunk added 13 and Ethan Houghtaling eight.

Taylor Griggs went off for 37 points, outscoring Concord all by herself, in the Lady Longhorns' 61-33 rout of the Lady Pirates Dec. 9 in the tourney's opening round.

The Horns opened tournament play with a big 54-17 victory over the Salem Greyhounds Dec. 9.

Jordan Cotter scored 12 points for Viola.
