Beginning Jan. 1, alligator gar fishermen and bowfishers in Arkansas will be required to obtain a free permit from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
The permit will help AGFC biologists gather important details on the alligator gar harvest in the state.
The permit will be available online at www.agfc.com beginning Jan. 1 and at regional AGFC offices around the state. Fishermen will be able to print the permit from the Web site.
After Jan. 1, the permit and a valid Arkansas fishing license will be required to fish and bowfish for alligator gar during the 2010 season.
The Bowfishers of Arkansas and the Bowfishing Association of America have met with AGFC fisheries biologists over the proposed regulation changes and endorsed the permit requirement.
