Masterson said when he was taking classes at College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo., in January 2006, he volunteered at the campus fire department. The campus fire department would respond to fires on campus and off campus if the local fire departments needed help putting out a fire.
Masterson went on to volunteer for Western Taney County Fire Protection in June of 2006. "That's where I received a lot of my training," Masterson said.
After learning much from the fire departments he volunteered for in Taney County, Masterson moved back home to Thayer in October 2006. "Then, a year later I was voted on down here (Thayer Volunteer Fire Department) in October of 2007," Masterson said. "I've got just about two years here and about four years total in the fire service."
He also helps dispatch with the Thayer Police Department.
Masterson received his associate's degree in fire science technology from Missouri State University in West Plains in May 2009. Masterson also went through state certification in hazardous materials awareness and operations and has been state certified in other fire service areas as well.
Masterson is continuing to receive more certification so he can apply to work at larger fire departments in larger areas.
