Cavemen stopped by Katz

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

The first time they met on the hardwood this season, Melbourne needed an extra period to edge past Cave City 65-64.

The second time they met on the hardwood this season, one week after their first hookup, Cave City turned the tables and edged past Melbourne 44-35 in the Lyon College Tournament finals.

The third time they met on the hardwood this season, there was to be no need for overtimes or close finishes.

Using their powerful inside punch of Dalton Grigg and Spencer Caraway, the Bearkatz pushed past the Cavemen 57-31 to claim top prize in the senior boys' division of the Izard County Invitational Tournament finals Jan. 23 at The Arena in Melbourne.

The third-seeded Cavemen just had no answers for Grigg and Spencer Caraway inside the paint in the championship game.

Grigg led all scorers with 15 points, while Caraway followed close with 12.

Grigg racked up top-seeded Melbourne's first seven points of the game to get the Katz rolling.

Zac Smith (10 points) answered with Cave City's first two hoops of the matchup, but Melbourne had built a 17-9 lead by the time the first period ended.

Spencer Caraway picked up in the second where Grigg had left off in the first, knocking down back-to-back-to-back buckets down low for Melbourne.

Taylor Milligan (six points) hit four free throws for Cave City's last points of the second, and after Cody Cooper (nine points) capped the frame with a layup near the buzzer, the Bearkatz stood in front 33-15 at intermission.

The Cavemen did outscore Melbourne 12-11 in the third period, but that wasn't enough to erase much off the Bearkatz' lead, leaving Cave City in a 44-27 hole after three periods.

To put the game on ice, Melbourne held the Cavemen to four points in the fourth, while the Katz ended the game on an 8-0 burst, including an alley-oop dunk by Grigg, to notch yet another Izard County Tourney title for Melbourne.

Sam Cooper finished with eight points for the Katz, while Derek Baird and Kody Caraway logged five points each.

Brice Taylor logged three points for Melbourne.

Dalton Bell and Seth Foreman tallied six points each for Cave City, with Brandon Gillihan adding three.
