Jumping in front with a dominating first-half effort, the fourth-seeded Couch Indians toppled top-seeded Summersville 54-50 Jan. 27 in round three of the annual Big Spring Conference Tournament in Van Buren.
The Indians led by as many as 16 points in the second half, but the Wildcats did not go quietly. Instead, Summersville kept fighting back and pulled within two points of Couch late in the fourth period.
However, the Indians righted the ship, hit some big free throws late and fended off the Wildcat charge to post a four-point win over Summersville.
Couch led 14-8 after one, 34-22 at intermission and 48-33 heading into the final frame.
Couch held Summersville's high-flying guard, Scott Haynes, to just four points in the first half of play.
Derrick Martin tossed in 12 points for Couch. He also controlled the paint and swatted away shot attempts when the Wildcats got close to the hoop.
Eddie Meier added 12 points, while Josh Brame finished with five points. Jesse Janes and Derek Orchard logged four points each. Brandin Orchard and Chris Taylor posted two points each.
