The Alton Lady Comets were right where they wanted to be with a shade over two minutes remaining in their clash with Eminence in the third round of the Big Spring Conference Tournament Jan. 27 at Van Buren.
When Becca See (11 points) drilled a huge 3-pointer at the 2:16 mark of the fourth period, the third-seeded Lady Comets held a 58-51 lead.
But the second-seeded Lady Redwings refused to quit and outscored Alton 10-2 over the course of the last two minutes to post a 61-60 come-from-behind win over the Lady Comets.
Eminence's do-everything sophomore guard, Kelsey Williams, had an outstanding final eight minutes, tossing in 20 of her game-high 34 points in the last period.
Williams sank a 3-pointer with 59 ticks left in the game to knot the score at 60-all.
Alton missed a shot on its next trip down the floor and with 11 seconds left, Eminence's Brooke Williams (16 points) was fouled, earning her a trip to the free throw line.
She hit a charity toss to give the Lady Redwings their first lead of the second half.
The Lady Comets pushed the ball down court and had a couple of chances close to the bucket, but just couldn't get a shot to fall. Kelsey Williams grabbed the last rebound as time expired, giving the Lady Redwings a hard-earned one-point victory.
The way the game started, it looked like Eminence might run away and hide early.
The Lady Redwings opened the game on a 10-0 run to grab control from the opening tip.
See hit a jumper at the 4:02 mark of the first for Alton's first points of the night.
Alex Hower got on track by popping a 3-ball a couple of minutes later for the Lady Comets. Hower had another fantastic night on the offensive end, racking up a team-high 27 points for Alton.
When the first period ended, Eminence held an 18-12 lead.
Hower really warmed up in the second and tossed in 10 straight points, including back-to-back triples, tying the contest at 22-all.
Myranda Reynolds (four points) hit a baseline jumper late in the second, followed by a trey from Cassie Benson (eight points), that helped ease Alton in front 31-17 at the half.
This after the Lady Comets had trailed 10-0 to start the game.
Alton continued to add to this lead in the third and when Kristina Russback (six points) hit a hoop in the paint midway into the third, the Lady Comets had used an 11-zip burst to open up a 10-point lead, 40-30.
Alton took a 44-35 cushion into the last period.
But Kelsey Williams simply refused to let her team lose and she took over the fourth period with a battery of drives and darts into the paint to keep Eminence in position for a win.
Lacey Hodge finished the night with four points for Alton.
