The Viola junior Lady Longhorns used a productive stretch early in the fourth period to open up enough space to capture the 1A-2 North District Junior High Tournament title with a 30-22 victory over Calico Rock Feb. 13 at Norfork High School.
The fourth-seeded junior Lady Horns held a slim 20-17 lead after three periods of play.
But Viola opened the final frame with a putback by Haylee Connors (six points), layup by Hannah Duvall (seven points) and short jumper from Kiersten Moore to extend its lead to 24-17. Moore led the junior Lady Longhorns with 12 points.
Savannah Skidmore broke the Viola run with a jumper with 59 seconds remaining in the game, and then with 19 ticks left, she racked up an old-fashioned 3-point play, but it was just not enough to push the second-seeded junior Lady Pirates over the top. Skidmore led all scorers with a game-high 14 points and she tossed in all five of Calico Rock's points in the final period of play.
Viola led 6-5 after the first period and 13-10 at intermission.
Karlee Dockins finished with five points for the junior Lady Longhorns.
Molly Knight logged six points for Calico Rock, while Kerrigan Cook ended the game with two points.
