March 1 is deadline for personal property assessment

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Oregon County Assessor Charles Alford reminds county residents that March 1 is the deadline for returning 2009 Personal Property Assessment lists to the assessor's office.

Missouri law requires all residents and business owners to declare all taxable personal and business property they owned as of Jan. 1, 2009, to the assessor.

Taxable property includes motor vehicles, boats, trailers, livestock, farm machinery and business-related equipment.

The assessment lists are the basis of 2009 personal and business property tax bills that are mailed in November.

State law requires residents to fill out and return the lists to the county assessor no later than March 1.

Taxpayers who did not receive an assessment list or have questions can contact the assessor's office at 417-778-7471 or visit the office in the Oregon County Courthouse in Alton.
