In just what one would expect in a district tournament championship game, the homestanding Viola Lady Longhorns and Calico Rock Lady Pirates turned up the intensity in front of a jam-packed crowd at the Longhorn Corral Feb. 20.
The Lady Longhorns did blue collar work in the first quarter to hold a 16-10 lead over the Lady Pirates, and although Viola maintained pace in the second, Calico Rock took advantage of a couple of long-range buckets to go up 22-20 at the break.
After switching ends of the court for the second half, the constant ball pressure from the Lady Pirates created just enough turnovers to set the pace for the second half.
Scrapping for each rebound and loose ball, Viola came up short in the end, and Calico Rock broke away for a 50-43 victory and the 1A-2 North District Tournament title.
The Lady Pirates took on the Black Rock Lady Zebras in the opening round of the regional tourney at Harold Ray Jeffery Gymnasium Feb. 24. The Lady Horns were scheduled to hook up with Armorel Feb. 25 in the first round of the regional tournament.
In the semi-final round of district play Feb. 18, the Lady Pirates topped Mammoth Spring 55-50.
The Lady Pirates used a big 11-3 push in the fourth period to open up some breathing run in a tight game. Calico Rock led 30-24 at the half.
Sloan Lively led Calico Rock with a game-high 18 points, while Emily Johnson had 15 and Taylor Cox 10.
