Cougars stopped in opening round of district play

Izard County saw its basketball season come to a close in the first round of the 1A-2 North District Tournament Feb. 16 at the Longhorn Corral in Viola.

The third-seeded Calico Rock Pirates stopped the sixth-seeded Cougars 55-46.

Calico Rock opened the game on a 16-6 burst and then hit some timely free throws down the stretch to fend off Izard County.

Trenton Hatman paced the Cougars with 21 points. Ryan Walker added nine and Caleb Cowan eight. Jake Dockins had five and Preston Harmon three for Izard County.

The Pirates were led by Brayden McCurley's game-high 25 points. Sam Nave added 14. Alex Skidmore and Jake Pool logged five points each. Jordan Green, Garrett Dockins and Matt Stone finished with two points apiece.

The fifth-seeded Lady Cougars dropped a 50-35 decision to the fourth-seeded Mammoth Spring Lady Bears earlier in the evening.

Amber Hall led the way for Izard County with 13 points, with Rachel Harmon adding 12. Kristen Doty had six and Trisha Arnold four.

Sierra Smoot paced Mammoth Spring with 12, while Jessy Jo Vest posted eight and Bianca Paige seven. Kaitlyn Haney had six, while Amy Young and Tiffany Angotti finished with four points each. Kendal Rogers and Jamie Bellows scored three points each. Shy Smoot had two and Brittany Bearden one.
