In what is fast becoming an annual rite of passage, two of the state's top-ranked girls' Class 3A squads, the Cave City Cavewomen and the Valley Springs Lady Tigers, squared off in the regional finals once again.
Meeting for the fourth time this season, the last coming in the finals of the district tourney one week earlier, the fourth-ranked Lady Tigers (28-5) made it three wins in a row over the sixth-ranked Cavewomen (21-5) with a tight 44-40 victory in overtime Feb. 27 at Manila High School in the Class 3A Region 3.
In the semi-finals, Cave City built a big halftime lead and then held off a late push by the Corning Lady Bobcats to win 56-49 Feb. 26.
The Cavewomen led 9-6 after one, 32-11 at the half and 42-28 after three.
Cheyenne Childers racked up 24 points, with Brooklyn Brinkley adding 11.
In opening-round action Feb. 25, the Cavewomen ended the season of the homestanding Manila Lady Lions by the count of 68-46.
The Cavewomen led 17-9 after one, 31-21 at the break and 51-36 heading into the final frame.
Childers paced all scorers with 29 points, while Haley Bell added 15 points and eight boards. Jessica Hall finished with 11 points for Cave City.
