You can bank on thing thing for certain -- every time the Melbourne Bearkatz and Turrell Rockets hook up on the hardwood, there's bound to be enough excitement to fill up a gymnasium of any size.
And such was the case Feb. 27 at Midland High School, host of the Class 2A North Regional Tournament.
In a game pitting a pair of the state's best Class 2A teams, the fifth-ranked Rockets edged past the third-ranked Bearkatz 67-64 to bag the regional tournament championship. Turrell (20-4) led 32-29 at the halftime break, but Melbourne (32-5) rallied to move in front 49-44 after three periods of play.
With three ticks left on the fourth-period clock, Turrell held a slim one-point lead and Melbourne held the basketball.
But the Katz were whistled for a traveling call and were forced to foul the Rockets with one second left. Turrell made the two free throws to slip past Melbourne 67-64 in thrilling fashion. Spencer Caraway led the Katz with 25 points, while Kody Caraway added 21.
Fueled by 28 points from Spencer Caraway, the Bearkatz cruised past the home team from Midland 62-43 in the semi-final round Feb. 26.
