Lady Katz regional champs

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Fresh off their district tournament-winning performance one week earlier, the Melbourne Lady Bearkatz kept things rolling towards the state tournament with a 70-62 win over Cotter in the championship game of the Class 2A North Region Tournament Feb. 27 at Midland High School.

The Lady Bearkatz (29-7), who finished first in conference play with a perfect 12-0 mark, are currently ranked number five in girls' Class 2A hoops.

Karli Gillihan led the way with 19 points, while Maggie Jo Cooper had 18 points in the win over the Lady Warriors. Kenzi Gillihan finished with 12, Kaylee Ables had nine, Amanda Treat seven and Sara Beth Adams five.

The East Poinsett County Lady Warriors simply had no answer for Cooper in the semi-final round Feb. 26.

She erupted for a game-high 33 points to power the Lady Bearkatz past EPC in a close one, 75-74.

Cooper poured in 20 points to lead the Lady Bearkatz past Riverside 80-37 in the first round Feb. 24.

Ables added 13 points, while Treat racked up 11 points in Melbourne's rout.
