They were hoping for another meeting in the Spa City.
In the state finals.
Instead, the Melbourne Bearkatz and Conway St. Joseph had to settle for a date in Carlisle.
In the opening round of the Class 2A State Tournament.
But the one thing that didn't change from the team's previous meeting -- unfortunate for Katz' fans -- in last year's Class 2A state title game was the outcome.
Riding a big game in the paint from Wade Beck, Conway St. Joseph pushed past Melbourne 70-51 March 4 at Bison Arena in Carlisle.
Beck led the Bulldogs (27-4) with 21 points.
And according to Melbourne Head Coach Mike Watson, that played a big part in the re-match of last year's state finalists.
"They really hurt us inside," he said. "They just did a good job executing their offense."
The Bearkatz (32-7) got on the scoreboard first, but Conway St. Joseph quickly grabbed the lead for good.
The Bulldogs led 19-8 after the first period of the game and then turned that cushion into 14 points, 32-18 at intermission.
Spencer Caraway led all scorers with 22 points for the regional runners-up from Melbourne, while Dalton Grigg followed with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Cody cooper added six points, Kody Caraway had four, with Derek Baird and Matt Loggains notching two points each.
