ASU murder still under investigation

Thursday, April 29, 2010

An April 16 shooting on the campus of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro is still under investigation by the Arkansas State Police.

The shooting occured in the early morning hours at Collegiate Park Apartments.

The shooting victim is Michael Gilmore, 24, a senior from West Helena.

Gilmore was airlifted to a Memphis hospital where he later died.

The University Police Chief Jim Chapman said the shooting does not appear to be random in nature. They have a person of interest, but no further information of the crime, other than the shooter was not a student at the university.

Several news reports have scrutinized the University Police for not seeking outside assistance in the investigation, but the department stated in a news story aired on Region 8 news that they feel confident in their abilities to solve the crime.

Following the shooting, the university notified the campus via an emergency alert through text messaging to stay indoors. Posters were later posted in all residence areas regarding the shooting.

The vice chancellor of student affairs, Dr. Rick Stripling said in a press release, "The safety of our students is alway s a concern. The university wants to ensure that all safety procedures are followed and that students are properly notified when any unforeseen event occurs on our campus."

The University Police seek any information regarding the crime. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the University Police Department at 870-972-2093.
