Cherokee Village alderman resigns after rape charge

Thursday, April 29, 2010

Cherokee Village Mayor Lloyd Hefley announced April 9 that Billie Earl Shelton, Jr., 45, who served as an alderman for the city for Ward 2 Position 1 has resigned his position due to the rape charges filed against him in Fulton County.

Hefley said his position will be filled until the end of his term by appointment.

Shelton was arrested April 14 on a Class Y felony charge of rape.

Reports from the Fulton County Sheriff's Department indicated that Shelton and his estranged wife had been in a verbal altercation when he returned to the family home and sexually forced himself upon a female living in the home.

The victim was able to escape Shelton when he went to take a shower after the rape. She then called the police.

He was taken into custody and later posted a $150,000 professional bond with First Arkansas Bail Bonds. He has already had his first hearing.

The Alderman was also employed at Ash Flat Walmart in management, according to a representative at the Fulton County Sheriff's Department.
