Johnston announces candidacy for Missouri House

Chris Johnston from Alton, Mo., has announced that he will be seeking the Republican nomination for the Missouri House of Representatives. Johnston will make a run for the 153rd District seat in the August ,2010 primary election, a position that Mike Dethrow has filled since 2002. Dethrow is not running due to term limitations.

Chris Johnston is a 42-year-old, retired military businessman who owns Southern Missouri Refreshments, a vending company located in Alton, Mo., which provides service to 40 North Arkansas and South Missouri businesses. He currently lives on a small farm and raises cattle and horses.

He is married to Melissa, who is employed by Ozarks Medical Center at the Alton Medical Clinic. He has three children: a son, Skyler age 24, who is a recent graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia and resides in Des Moines, Iowa; a daughter, Delaney age 16, who is a student at Alton High School; and daughter, Bailey age 12, who attends Alton Elementary.

After attending Alton High School, Johnston honorably served his country in the United States Navy for over 20 years and attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer where he was responsible for directing the daily efforts of over 900 Navy and Marine Corps personnel while at sea. Having seen action in several hostile zones including Somalia, Bosnia, the Persian Gulf, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, Johnston was decorated with 17 medals and citations, including the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.

Johnston is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and currently serves as the District 18 Senior Vice Commander for the state and is the Oregon County Memorial Post Senior Vice Commander, as well the Veterans Service Information Officer. He is a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Association, a member of Ducks Unlimited, NRA, NWTF and AF&AM #387 Thomasville, Scottish Rite (Valley of Columbia) and the Abou Ben Adhem Shriners of Springfield.

While in the military, Johnston attended Central Texas College and the University of Maryland (European Campus), seeking his Criminal Justice Degree.

Johnston, who has traveled the world and witnessed first hand how other countries live on a daily basis, believes his conservative Republican values, leadership abilities and his deep love of this country would serve the people of the 153rd District and Missouri honorably in the House of Representatives, which includes all of Ripley, Oregon, Carter, and parts of Butler and Wayne counties.
