Viola continues to roll

The Viola Lady Longhorns (25-6) punched their ticket to the 1A Region 2 Softball Tournament finals with an 11-1 win over Izard County May 8 at Viola City Park.

Viola scored three times in the first, three times in the fourth and five times in the fifth.

Dedra Johnston threw a no-hitter in the contest, with Izard County's lone run coming on a walk and an error.

Alex Duncan had three hits and three runs-batted-in for the Lady Horns, while Lindsay Walker had a pair of hits, including a double.Andrea DuVall added a pair of hits for Viola.

Viola's game with Hillcrest for the regional championship was pushed back to May 11, after the deadline for this issue of The News.

In opening-round play May 7, the Lady Longhorns wiped out Black Rock 16-1 in three innings.

Viola set the tempo early with 10 runs in the second inning.

Johnston earned the win, giving up just one earned run while striking out three.

Leslie Barker had two double and four ribbies, while Johnston batted in two runs. Heather Simmons and Taylor Griggs (RBI) had three hits apiece.
