Flyers placed on mailboxes

Friday, May 21, 2010

Complaints from area residents regarding political material being left on mailboxes during the night hours in the Hardy area has caused a lot of attention.

The slanderous material was left on several boxes requesting voters not to vote for one female political candidate.

Many in the area are unaware that leaving anything on or inside of a mailbox is a federal offense. The mailbox is considered federal property. Whether the location of the box is on a house, in front of your yard or a collection point, it is the sole property of the United States Postal Service.

The charges are very serious as once it is installed, it becomes the property of the United States Government.

It is absolutely illegal to put any item on or inside the boxes.

The complaints regarding this offense are being looked into by federal authorities.

Citizens need to be aware of the fact that mailboxes are off limits to anyone but postal partons.
