Lady Bearkatz stopped by Foreman

The Melbourne Lady Bearkatz were knocked out of the quarterfinals Class 2A State Softball Tournament with a 9-1 loss to the Foreman Lady Gators May 15 in Norphlet.

The Lady Gators broke open a tie game after four innings with four runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.

In opening-round action may 14 in Junction City, Melbourne (22-5) steamrolled Quitman 15-0 in four innings.

Maggie Jo Cooper worked a perfect three innings in the circle, while Michelle Arnold came on and gave up just one hit in the fourth.

At the plate, Cooper tripled, while Amanda Treat and Karli Gillihan notched a double apiece.

Stacee Hargett finished with two hits for Melbourne.

In the regionals finals in Marked Tree May 11, it was the Lady Katz who took home the top honors for the third straight season.

Melbourne knocked off conference for Cedar Ridge for the fourth time on the year, with the 7-3 victory giving the Lady Bearkatz the regional championship.

Melbourne scored four runs in the third, one in the fifth and two in the sixth, en route to the win.

All three of the Lady T-Wolves' runs came in the fifth stanza.

Cooper was the winning pitcher for Melbourne.
