Taylor tops Cougs

The Izard County Cougars saw their run in the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament end with a 15-5 loss to the hosts from Taylor May 14 in Pine Bluff.

Taylor was up 2-1 when the Tigers busted open the close contest with seven runs in the fourth.

Izard County fought back with four runs in the top of the fifth, but Taylor responded to the Cougars' challenge with four runs in the bottom of the frame.

Miguel Hinojosa took the loss for Izard County, striking out three while walking two and giving up six hits.

Jed Yarnell homered and drove in three runs for the Cougars, with Preston Harmon adding an RBI on two hits.

In the third-place game of the 1A Region 2 Tournament May 11 in Brockwell, the Cougars slid past Calico Rock 4-3.

Hinojosa was the winning pitcher, striking out nine while giving up three hits in seven innings of work.

He threw a total of 71 pitches, 67 of which were strikes.

Alex Skidmore struck out six on the hill for the Pirates, giving up just two hits in the contest.

Hinojosa and Yarnell had Izard County's two hits, while Remi Lively, Skidmore and Morgan Lamb hit safely for Calico Rock.
