Longhorns out-slugged by Trojans

Friday, May 21, 2010

Viola kept pace for a while, but in the end, Kirby outscored the Longhorns 22-10 in the first round of the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament May 14 at Pine Bluff Regional Park.

Kirby was up 13-4 in the top of the fifth, when Viola (27-5) responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame.

Viola got within four runs, down 14-10, when the Trojans crossed the plate eight times in the top of the seventh to seal the 22-10 victory.

Jacob Payne had four hits and two RBIs for Viola, while Jordan Cotter had three hits, including two triples, and two runs-batted-in.

Jacob Luther added a pair of hits, Dylan Holstine doubled and drove in two, Matt Prinner tripled and Zane Kunz logged two RBIs.

It was a marathon affair, but the Longhorns managed to outlast Hillcrest for a 5-4 victory in 15 innings in the championship game of the 1A Region 2 Tournament May 11 in Brockwell.

The Screamin' Eagles had a three-run lead in the top of the seventh when Viola rallied with three in the bottom of the frame to lock matters at 4-all. Holstine sent a sacrifice fly to center for the game-tying run. Later, in the 15th inning, Holstine would drive in the game-winning run for Viola.

With two outs in the bottom of the 15th, Luther reached on a throwing error. Jacob Payne then walked, giving Viola runners on first and second. Holstine then stepped into the batter's box and sent a fly ball to left that was mis-played, allowing Luther to score the winning run from second base.

Cotter earned the win on the mound, giving up just three hits, while fanning seven and walking none.

Prinner jacked a solo home run for one of his two hits in the game.

Dolan Johnston and Austin Gardner added two hits each for the Horns.
