The Oregon County Sheriff's Office, working with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Alton City Police Department conducted an investigation over the weekend into the shooting death of Robert Hardwick, 43, of Alton.
Hardwick was found shot to death in a remote location off Oregon County Road 201.
Two men have been arrested and charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the case. Samuel Allen Burkhead, 36, of Alton and Marvin Allen Hardwick, 42, of Alton remain in the Oregon County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond each.
According to the office of the Oregon County Prosecuting Attorney, the shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 31. No motive has been discussed by investigators in the case.
Court documents show that Marvin Hardwick allegedly led his brother Robert Hardwick to a local quarry, where Samuel Burkhead then shot him.
In paperwork filed with the charges, Oregon County Sheriff's Deputy Eddie Johnson wrote that Amos Hardwick had reported that his youngest son, Marvin, and his friend, Burkhead, had found his oldest son, Robert, dead at the Doss and Harper Quarry on County Road 201.
Johnson wrote that upon arriving at the quarry he found Robert Hardwick dead, and then advised Burkhead of his Miranda rights. Johnson wrote that Burkhead admitted to shooting Robert Hardwick in the back of the head.
Johnson also stated in his affidavit that Burkhead stated he had discussed the killing with Robert Hardwick's parents and brother, and that they knew he was going to kill him, they just didn't know when. The deputy also wrote that Burkhead stated that Marvin Hardwick was with him at the time of the shooting.
The investigation is continuing in the case.
