In the first half, there was just too much Jessica Flanery.
And in the second half, there was just too much Mountain View, period.
Playing like the top-ranked team in Class 3A that they are, the Mountain View Lady Yellowjackets successfully defended their Lyon College Invitational Tournament crown from last year, with a 52-38 win over Calico Rock (14-3) in this year's championship game on Dec. 11 at Becknell Gymnasium in Batesville.
The Lady Yellowjackets used back-to-back-to-back hoops from Flanery to open up a 12-5 lead deep in the first period. Flanery, the tournament MVP, scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the first half of play, helping Mountain View stay in front all evening long.
Brittany Fountain (five points) hit a jumper to close the first period with the Lady Pirates down 12-7.
Flanery tossed in the Lady Yellowjackets' first seven points of the second, to extend Mountain View's advantage to 19-9.
But Calico Rock kept fighting, even from a 10-point hole.
Savannah Skidmore (three points) hit a pair of charity tosses, while Emily Johnson (seven points) added one of her own and Sloan Lively (seven points) nailed a triple to pull the Lady Pirates within six, down 21-15.
Mountain View missed some big chances to build onto its lead by struggling at the free throw line and Calico Rock took full advantage of those woes, getting a stickback at the buzzer from Kaitlyn Fry (five points) to go to the halftime break trailing by just four, 24-20.
What Calico Rock needed was a fast start to the third period to continue its comeback march.
What Calico Rock got was anything but that.
Mountain View came storming out of the gate in the second half, opening the third period on an 18-1 run to retake control of the contest.
With the Lady Yellowjackets up 42-21 at the 2:31 mark of the third, the Lady Pirates did come alive with a nice flurry to cap the frame.
Johnson and Taylor Cox (five points) hit back-to-back hoops, while Fry popped a trey and Brandy DeLoach hit a free throw that brought the third to an end with Mountain View leading 44-29.
Calico Rock could get no closer and the Lady Yellowjackets became the first team in the girls' division to repeat as Lyon College champs in almost 10 years (Cave City in 2000 and 2001).
Karli Gillihan finished with three points for Calico Rock.
Emily Johnson and Brooke McCurley (three points) were named to the All-Tournament team.
In the semi-finals Dec. 10, the Lady Pirates knocked off Southside 46-39.
McCurley led Calico Rock with 10 points.
Mountain View earned its spot in the finals with a 59-26 victory over Cave City.
