Cougars tangle up conference

With a 42-29 victory over the visiting Mammoth Spring Bears Jan. 4, the Izard County Cougars created one heck of a log-jam atop the 1A-2 North standings.

Izard County, Mammoth Spring, Viola and Calico Rock are all tied for first place with two losses apiece in conference play.

The Bears (14-5, 5-2) led Izard County (16-3, 7-2) 25-23 after three periods of play, but the Cougars outscored Mammoth Spring 19-4 in the fourth for the win.

Preston Harmon led the way with 15 points for the Cougars, while Dalton Grigg added 10.

Trenton Hatman and Ryan Walker had six points each, with Caleb Cowan posting five.

Garrett Wooldridge logged 13 points for the Bears, with Caleb Brown hitting for seven and Chris Young five.

Matt Turnbough had three and Houston Cooper one.

In girls' action, the Lady Bears held Izard County scoreless in the second half, en route to a 40-8 win.

Mammoth Spring (11-6, 5-2) was up 17-8 at intermission.

Kayla Hale paced the Lady Bears with 12 points, while Jessy Jo Vest added 10. Sydney Peck had eight, and Tiffany Angotti and Kaitlyn Haney finished with five points each.

In junior girls' play, Izard County won 41-35.

Hannah Doty and Lauren Jones scored 12 points each for the junior Lady Cougars.
