A former Cherokee Village City Council member was sentenced to seven years in the Department of Corrections on March 7 for second degree sexual assault.

The charge originated from Shelton's April 14, 2010 arrest on a class Y felony charge of rape.

Through a negotiated plea with the Fulton County Prosecutor's office, Shelton pled to the lesser charge of second degree sexual assault, a Class B felony.

According to the original police report submitted by the Cherokee Village Police Department last year, Shelton and his estranged wife had been involved in an argument, after which Shelton stated to police that he returned to his home and forced himself upon a female victim who resided at the residence.

The alleged victim stated that when her attacker was done, he got up to take a shower, at which time she was able to get away and call police.

Shelton was a Cherokee Village Alderman, representing Ward 2, Position 1.
