"They start out nervous, but then they settle down," Henslee said Monday, March 7, of his students' ability to "outsmart" their opponents.
Of 16 quiz bowl teams (pared down from 40) that competed at the Arkansas Governor's Quiz Bowl last month, Mammoth Spring placed third.
"We're pretty well rounded. That speaks for the teachers," Henslee said.
Henslee has coached the team each of the seven years he taught at Mammoth Spring and was proud to watch his junior high students place third in the 1A Class.
He said the students show an amazing dedication to the mental "sport," often practicing twice a week after school.
"That's on their own time," Henslee said.
The Mammoth Spring Junior High quiz bowl team also was a regional runner-up, finishing second in the 1A Class competition at Izard County Consolidated School District on Feb. 16.
Quiz bowl members must meet certain academic requirements, including grade-point average, to participate.
Saturday, March 12, Mammoth Spring School District will host a regional quiz bowl with as many as 10 teams competing. Nine have confirmed, so far, Henslee said.
