AND ONE TO GROW ON: On April 16, legendary football coach David Meek celebrated his 80th birthday with a suprise party at the Elks Lodge in Thayer. Many friends and family were in attendance, along with former players and coaches. There was a barbecue buffett along with a birthday cake and many presents. Coach Meek came to Thayer in 1953 and coached until his departure in 1957, taking a coaching job in Flat River, Mo. He returned from 1983-1999 as head coach, and was 10-0 in 1990 and voted Coach of the Year that season. He was inducted to the Missouri High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1999. He served as a senior high assistant football coach in Osceola, Ark., from 2001-2011. Next year he will be doing the same in Melbourne, Ark.
