Joe graduated from Alton High School, and served in the U.S. Army for four years in the European Theater, where he was the postmaster of his division. He worked at the Bank of Thayer and later for the U.S. Postal Service until retirement.
Joe was a member of the Freewill Baptist, Thayer, serving as treasurer for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion of Thayer.
Joe married Joyce Lawanda Nickless on March 7, 1947 in Alton, Mo. They moved to Republic in 1995 where they attended the Brookline Baptist Church until his health failed.
His parents, two stepbrothers, and three stepsisters preceded Joe in death.
He is survived by: his wife, Lawanda; a daughter, Linda Griffin, Republic, formerly of Thayer; a grandson, Joey Honeycutt, and his children, Brittany, Kayla, and Dylan; grandson Darren Honeycutt, his wife, Andrea, and their children, Erika and Delaina; step granddaughters, Shelly Jewell and Susan Daly; step great grandchildren, Colby Burris, Nathan, Natilie, Austin, and Amanda Goodwin, Colton Jewell, Cesilie, and Cameron Centobie; brothers-in-law, Roy Fuller, Thayer, Paul Nickless, Camdenton, and a very special friend, Karen Kay Paul, Newburg.
A visitation was held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at Meadors Funeral Home, Republic. The funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday, in the funeral home, with Rev. Mitchell Wright officiating. A graveside service and burial, with military honors, was at 3:30 p.m. Monday, in the Thayer City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorials be given to the Brookline First Baptist Church.
