Former teacher receives Sidney Cardinal Award

Nola Marlin Weaver of Batesville was presented the Alumni's "Cardinal Award" during the biennual Sidney School Homecoming on Sept. 4.

Weaver, who attended school at Sidney, returned and taught at the school during World War II. She has been active in reunion events since the gatherings started in 1981.

The Sidney school mascot was the cardinal bird until the district was dissolved by consolidation in the summer of 1957.

The award was established in 2007. Atalee Conyers Pounders was the first recipient.

Others who have received the award include Verbyl and Delmus Caraway, former Mayor Gwen Battles, Buell Wilkes, Eunice "Brownie" Brewer and Craig Ogilvie.

About 125 people attended the afternoon reunion, held in the fellowship hall of the Sidney Baptist Church.

Former students traveled from Florida, Maryland, Texas, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, and throughout Arkansas.

Verbyl Caraway has served as chairperson of reunion for 30 years. The next homecoming will be the first Sunday in September 2013.
