Officials with Missouri State University-West Plains and the West Plains Area Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, to mark the grand opening of the university's new Veterans Incentive Program (VIP) Center.

The center is located in room 102 on the lower level of the Garnett Library, 304 W. Trish Knight St.

Brief remarks will be given by Missouri State-West Plains Chancellor Drew Bennett.

"The VIP Center is now in operation and fully staffed to meet the needs of our veteran students from enrollment to completion," said program coordinator Mark White. "Those attending also can meet the staff and enjoy refreshments."

The center is funded by a $386,776 grant from the U.S. Department of Education through the 2010 Centers of Excellence for Veteran Student Success Program. It was awarded in October 2010 to Missouri State University for use on its Springfield and West Plains campuses. The Missouri State-West Plains center will help area veterans who choose to utilize their G.I. Bill benefits at Missouri State-West Plains navigate the enrollment process and provide specialized support for veterans as they complete their studies.

"The goal of the center is to provide veterans with a place of their own where they can gather and to offer a resource team made up of dedicated professionals across campus, all with the common goal of helping veterans reach their highest career potential through access to and full utilization of higher education leading to graduation," White said.

For more information, call White at 417-255-7720.
