Former officer's appeal denied

Friday, November 11, 2011

In a 50-minute noontime meeting Oct. 26, Thayer aldermen unanimously denied former Assistant Police Chief Michael Bunting's request to be reinstated to his position.

The board fired Bunting in closed session Oct. 18. No reason was cited in the board minutes, although Police Chief David Bailey said Bunting was not terminated for legal reasons.

Bailey said he and Bunting disagreed on department management.

Bunting, 39, served with the department since 2004, with a few months as interim police chief before the city hired Bailey in July 2008.

Alderman Steve Alford made the motion to deny Bunting's request for reinstatement, which was approved by the full board.

Bailey and City Attorney Bill Perkins also attended the closed appeal hearing.
