Thursday, December 22, 2011

Senior Garrett Johnson dribbled around for the last few seconds, making his way to the corner and launching a 3-pointer that would have tied the game against Pocahontas, but the shot failed to find the net, which gave the Redskins a 43-40 conference victory at Highland on Dec. 12.

Sophomore Chloe Sellars hit a game-tying basket to send the Lady Rebels into overtime at Trumann on Dec. 13, but Highland struggled to shoot in the extra period, falling to the Lady Wildcats 40-35.

The Rebels (1-7, 0-4) struggled against the Wildcats at Trumann on Dec. 15 falling 77-47 and the Lady Rebels (3-6, 2-2) allowed too many Lady Redskin scoring runs losing at Pocahontas 48-29 on Dec. 16.

With Highland up 13-6 in the Dec. 12 contest, Pocahontas hit a 3-pointer that the Rebels couldn't answer at the end of the first quarter to spur a small run by the Redskins that gave them a 17-15 lead midway through the second quarter.

Pocahontas would finish the half up 26-21, and lead 33-28 after three.

Hitting three of four free throws, Jalen Belleton cut the Redskin advantage to 33-31 with six minutes left in the game.

Highland exchanged baskets with Pocahontas the rest of the way, including a 3-pointer by Johnson.

Ethan Hoppe scored four of his team-leading 12 points at the end of the game, but Pocahontas made their free throws to secure the win.

Johnson had 10 points for the Rebels.

The Lady Rebels led Trumann 7-6 after one, but fell to 20-12 at halftime. Highland rallied in the second half cutting the lead to 27-21 at the end of three, before outscoring the Lady Wildcats 12-6 in the fourth to send the game into overtime.

In the first five possessions of the extra period, Trumann scored one point on four free throw tries, while Highland failed to connect on their two free throws, and allowed the Lady Cats to get a rebound on a missed free throw for a put back and a three-point lead.

Sellars drained two from the charity stripe, but Trumann kept the Lady Rebs from scoring again.

Britney Bair scored 16 for Highland and Hope Isaacs added nine.

Hoppe led Highland with 19 points against Trumann, but the Rebs couldn't overcome the Wildcats' 10 3-pointers.

Highland fell behind 20-12 in the first quarter. Hoppe and Jason Long scored four points each in the second, but the Rebs were still down 40-25 at halftime.

The Wildcats scored on eight consecutive possession to extend their lead to 65-37 after three.

The Lady Rebels led 8-5 midway through the first quarter, but Pocahontas went on a 9-0 run to take a 14-8 lead.

Leanne Fry hit two buckets to start the second, but Highland didn't score again in the half.

The Lady Redskins finished on a 8-0 run to extend their lead to 26-12.

Isaacs' bucket near the end of the third stopped an 8-0 run by Pocahontas, but the Lady Skins had a 39-21 advantage after three.

The tale of the tape shows that Highland made only 30 percent of their shots, as compared to Pocahontas' 48 percent.
