Lady Pirates face bigger foes in Mountain Home

The Calico Rock Lady Pirates opened play in the Ultimate Ford/1st Arkansas Bail Bonds tournament with a 82-58 setback to Class 5A Greenwood Dec. 28 at The Hanger in Mountain Home.

The going was tight at first, with the Class 1A defending state champs from Calico Rock (17-5) trailing by just four, 15-11, after one.

Greenwood opened things up a bit in the second and took a 36-22 lead at the break.

The Lady Pirates were down 58-42 entering the final frame of play.

Greenwood later played its way to the tournament title.

Emily Johnson paced Calico Rock with 13 points, while Karli Gillihan added 12.

Kaitlyn Fry, Savannah Skidmore and Brooke McCurley finished with eight points apiece. Sloan Lively had seven and Rachel Bevill two for the Lady Pirates.

In the consolation brackets the next day, the Class 5A Paragould Lady Rams dropped Calico Rock 60-47.

The Lady Pirates trailed 18-8 after one, 34-20 at halftime and 48-29 after three.

Johnson led all scorers with a game-high 26 points. McCurley added 10, Fry had five and Lively logged three points.Skidmore finished with two and Bevill one.

On the last day of tourney action, Calico Rock was edged by Sheridan, 57-54, on Dec. 29.

Sheridan led 15-13 after one, 26-24 at intermission and 42-36 after three.

Johnson finished with 17 points to lead the Lady Pirates, while Fry had 16 and Skidmore 13.

McCurley added five and Lively three points for Calico Rock.
