Late shot sinks Cavemen in Swifton

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Chaz Matthews poured in 34 points for the Cavemen, but that didn't stop the Trumann Wildcats from earning a spot in the championship game of the annual George Kell Classic in Swifton, with a narrow 78-77 win over Cave City Jan. 13 in the semi-final round.

With time winding down in the game, and with Cave City holding a 77-75 lead, Trumann's Dylan Dulaney hit a 3-pointer right before the buzzer sounded, lifting the Wildcats to the win.

Third-seeded Trumann led 15-12 after the first period, 39-35 at the half and 55-47 after three.

Seth Downs finished with 17 points for the Cavemen.

Matthews and Downs both played their way onto the All-Tournament team.

The Cavemen were also awarded the Bobby Winkle Sportsmanship Award at the Kell Classic.

In the quarter final on Jan. 9, the seventh-seeded Cavemen upset second-seeded Izard County 51-42.

Matthews tossed in a game-high 21 points and pulled down 10 boards for Cave City.

Preston Harmon had 13 points for the Cougars, while Trenton Hatman had 12.

The Cavewomen fell to Weiner 41-34 in the Kell Classic quarterfinals Jan. 9.

The contest was tied at 22-all at the half, but the Lady Cardinals moved in front 35-30 after three periods of play.

Jamie Holley paced Cave City with 22 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

She was named to the All-Tournament squad.
