Triple-OT? Again?

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Having just come off a three-overtime game at the Kell Classic, who would have guessed the Lady Rebels would have to go into 'extra innings' again, but that's exactly what happened in their home game against Osceola on Jan. 10. Once again, Highland survived to earn a 62-59 conference win over the Lady Seminoles.

In this game, Highland had the lead in waning seconds of regulation, but Osceola made a last-second shot to send the game into overtime.

The Lady Rebs had the lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Lady Seminoles took a 35-34 lead early in the period.

Hope Isaacs put in three buckets and went 3-of-6 from the free throw line to give Highland a 43-41 advantage with a minute left. Highland missed four free throws in the last minute before Osceola tied the game on a 'coast-to-coast' layup.

With Osceola leading 48-46 with six-tenths of second left on the clock, Isaacs caught the ball in the post, made the turn and released the ball quickly to extend the game.

Although Tabby McNulty tied the game at 53-all with two seconds to go by hitting her second attempt from the line, the Lady Rebs shooting woes continued from the free throw line as they went 3-of-11 in the second overtime.

The line was more favorable in the final period. Five different Lady Rebs went to the charity stripe and hit 7-of-10 to earn the win.

Osceola held the lead 13-8 after one, and Brittney Bair made two free throws to put Highland in front 23-22 at halftime.

Sydney Shackelford's bucket at the end of three kept Highland up 33-30.

Isaacs had 19 points to lead Highland (5-10, 3-4). Bair added 11 and Shackelford 10.

Bearcats 60, Rebels 39

A 16-6 third quarter by Brookland gave the Bearcats enough of a lead to hold off the Rebels and earn a 60-39 conference win at Highland on Jan. 9.

Highland forced five consecutive turnovers by Brookland, and Garrett Johnson and Brandon Walsh put in shots to cut the Bearcats lead to 14-12 after one.

Johnson and Chase Hutchings had buckets at the end of the second quarter to keep the game in reach, 28-22, going into halftime.

Ethan Hoppe and Walsh scored in the third, but Brookland hit 7-of-13 in the quarter to extend their lead to 44-28.

Hoppe scored nine in the fourth and Jalen Belleton put in a short jumper with three minutes left, but Highland wouldn't score again in the game.

Hoppe led Rebel scorers with 15. Johnson and Hutchings had eight points, apiece.

Seminoles 84,

Rebels 42

An unstoppable Osceola team laid in shot after shot on their way to a 32-8 first quarter lead, and a 84-42 conference victory at Osceola on Jan. 13.

Rebel senior H.D. Bobo scored the first points of the game, and the Seminoles went on a 17-0 run before Highland scored again in the opening period.

The offense improved for the Rebs in the second quarter, as they reeled off a 10-2 run on the back of Hutchings' six points, but Osceola extended their lead to 53-24 by halftime.

The Seminoles ensured the competition clock would run through the fourth with a 19-12 third quarter.

Hutchings led Highland (1-12, 0-7) with eight points. Ethan Hoppe and Garrett Johnson each added six points for the Rebels.
