Junior Cougars slide past Cave City in overtime

Thursday, February 2, 2012

Coby Jones tossed in six of his game-high 24 points in overtime, helping the top-seeded Izard County junior Cougars to a 42-38 victory over third-seeded Cave City in the championship game of the Izard County Invitational Tournament Jan. 28 at the Cougars' Den in Brockwell.

The game was tied at 34-all with less than 10 seconds to play in the fourth period, when Cave City had a chance to pull ahead late.

The junior Cavemen got off a hurried 3-point attempt at the buzzer, but it fell off target, sending the game into an extra period.

Jones jump-started the junior Cougars in that extra frame with a layup, followed by two charity tosses that pushed Izard County on top 38-34.

Cave City pulled within two, 38-36, on an inside bucket from Cody Childers with 43 ticks left.

But Andrew Walker (six points) sank a pair of free throws, followed by two more from Jones, that helped seal the deal for Izard County.

The junior Cougars led 8-4 after the first period.

Cave City got a pair of hoops early in the second from Gus Sharp (eight points) to knot matters at 8-all.

Laramie Hall (11 points) dropped in a pair of 3-pointers down the stretch in the second and Sharp sank a layup late in the frame to give the junior Cavemen a 19-17 advantage at intermission.

Izard County fought back in the third on back-to-back buckets from Jones, plus a couple of charity tosses from Clay Mosley (six points), giving the junior Cougars a 23-21 lead.

But Cave City had last say in the frame and, thanks to a trey by Tristen McSpadden (11 points). and a twisting layup at the buzzer from Colby Robison (four points), the junior Cavemen grabbed a 26-23 cushion after three.

Izard County held the lead for about the last four minutes of the fourth, before Cave City tossed in the last three points of the frame to send the game to OT.

Izard County outscored the junior Cavemen 8-4 in that extra frame, to win the Izard County Tourney title, 42-38.

Julio Martinez finished with four points for Izard County, while Michael Gleghorn added two.
