Teen accidently shoots friend, 14, to death

Jason Gregory Spurling, 14, of West Plains, was a skateboard enthusiast and paperboy.
A 14-year-old boy was shot to death Friday, Feb. 17, with a small-caliber handgun, according to a West Plains Police Department press release.

The incident occurred about 6:30 p.m. on Route BB.

Authorities believe that Jason Gregory Spurling was shot unintentionally in the chest by a 15-year-old friend at a trailer at 1760 State Route BB.

Spurling was taken to Ozarks Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 7:25 p.m. The 15-year-old was referred to juvenile authorities.

According to reports, two adults were in the home when the shooting occurred. One called 911, while the other performed CPR. Authorities have not released any other names.

Authorities said the teens were playing with the gun when it went off.

West Plains Police Department Information Officer Bryan Brauer said an autopsy is scheduled for this week.

A candlelit vigil was held at the Robert Neathery Skate Park on St. Louis St. Saturday evening, Feb. 18.
