Fire Department not discussed on AF agenda

The status of the Ash Flat Fire Department's search for a new headquarters was not discussed at the February meeting of the Ash Flat City Council, despite last month's letter from local auto dealer Terry Dillard to the city, in which he withdrew his offer to sell his property to the city.

Mayor Danny Traw did not discuss last month's letter or its implications with the council.

The department was, however, on the agenda under the Unfinished Business section.

Alderwoman Sue Ross questioned where the building would be located, stating, "We don't have anywhere to put it." Traw said the project was out for bids and told council, "We have several options, we will discuss these when we see what the bids are going to come in at."

The mayor then quickly moved to the next order of business, with no further discussion regarding the "options" he mentioned.

Traw indicated the bids would be opened on March 3 or 4, despite the city not owning land on which to construct the building, something that is obviously vital to the construction process, since land preparation and dirt work would normally be factored into a bid.

The fate of the department will apparently be addressed after the bid opening. Whether or not the fire department will be able to move to a new suitable location remains to be seen.
