It was spring high school baseball at its best on March 30 at the State Park, as the Mammoth Spring Bears and Izard County Cougars competed on the diamond.
The Cougars had mounted a 6-3 lead over the Bears going into the bottom of the seventh inning, and Mammoth Spring was down to its final at-bat.
With a runner on base, senior Wayne Coffey launched a two-strike global express over the left centerfield fence, to bring the Bears within one run of a tie game.
The Bears then got a base-runner on thanks to a walk on five pitches and that put the go-ahead batter in the box.
However, the Bears' rally hopes were left standing in the batters box on a called strike three, ending the game with Izard County on top 6-5.
