Oregon County deputies bust suspected Alton meth lab

Saturday, April 7, 2012

A rural Alton man was charged March 27 in Oregon County Circuit Court with three felony counts of manufacture and possession of methamphetamine, felony assault of an officer and endangering the welfare of children, along with two misdemeanor marijuana charges.

According to court records, two children under the age of 10 were sleeping in the home of John Carner, 51, when authorities located unmarked pill bottles, marijuana, smoking devices and other paraphernalia on March 18.

Officers with the Oregon County Sheriff's Department and West Plains/Howell County SWAT Team served the search warrant at Carner's Route 1 Alton home, where they also found items generally used to manufacture meth.

Deputy James Cruse noted in the probable cause statement that Carner refused to comply with officers' orders to get down. Carner allegedly grabbed Cruse by the throat, hit him in the nose and attempted to take Cruse's rifle before officers used a Taser gun to subdue Carner.

Carner has a court date of April 4.

A second suspect in the home, Ralph E. Williams, 52, was taken into custody without incident, according to reports. Williams was charged with two counts of misdemeanor marijuana possession. He has a court date of April 18.
